List of Home Moving Tasks
Four weeks before the move
- Take meter readings, organise disconnection of gas and electricity, and confirm new gas and electricity arrangements
- Tell phone company when your existing account should be closed, confirm connection of new line or whether you are adopting the seller's number
- Give notice to landlord if renting (check your notice period is not longer than four weeks first)
- Get removal quotes and check that the removal company are insured for damage caused to your contents during the move
- Check with your insurance company that your contents are covered during the move
- Gather packaging materials and boxes
- Redirect post
One week before the move
- Pay newspaper and milk bills
- Arrange care and transport for your pets on moving day
- Defrost the fridge and turn the freezer up to ensure contents remain frozen
- Send out change of address cards
- Confirm date and time with the removal company
- Start packing with clear labelling
- Don't forget the shed, garage, loft etc
Day before the move
- Finish packing, but keep an overnight bag
- Protect hall carpets with dust sheets
- Charge your mobile and check it has the numbers for estate agents and solicitors
- Keep emergency cash, credit cards, cheque book and mobile with you
Moving Day
- Pack the van
- Roll up the carpets
- Check you have left nothing behind
- Lock up
- Collect keys and move into your new home.
